BLT Sandwich with Fried Green Tomatoes

A BLT Sandwich is a top-tier sandwich! A classic BLT consists of cooked bacon, lettuce (usually romaine or iceberg), tomatoes and mayonnaise and is sandwiched between two slices of toast. Classics are great and all, but sometimes they need a little upgrade or refresh! Meet the shiny, new upgrade - my BLT Sandwich with Fried Green Tomatoes! This sandwich is creamy, crispy, crunchy, fresh, savoury, tangy and oh-so satisfying!

This sandwich substitutes fresh, ripe tomatoes for fried green tomatoes, mayonnaise for ranch dressing and toast for a soft and pillowy hamburger bun. If you’ve never tried green tomatoes, then this is your sign to do so! Unlike their ripe counterpart, green tomatoes are slightly acidic, firm, tangy and tart. The tomatoes are cut into slices, are taken through a three-step dredging process and are fried to absolute-perfection! Check out my fried green tomato recipe to learn how to make perfectly fried green tomatoes! The fried green tomatoes really make this sandwich GREAT! They’re crispy, crunch, juicy, smoky, tangy and so flavourful! Don’t get me wrong, I love a fresh, juicy and ripe tomato but as of late green tomatoes have had a hold on me!

Now, let’s get to the fun part – building the sandwich! Every sandwich needs a good base, and this is where a hamburger bun comes in! Unlike two slices of toast, this bun goes the distance! It’s airy, soft and pillowy and is large enough to contain all the delicious ingredients. Lay romaine lettuce over the bottom bun, top it with hot honey, glazed cooked bacon and fried green tomatoes. Skip the mayonnaise and drizzle store-bought or homemade ranch dressing over top. Ranch dressing is the perfect accompaniment, adding depth of flavour to this tasty breakfast sandwich. It’s creamy, fresh, tangy, savoury and slightly acidic. Finally, cover the BLT with the top hamburger bun and serve and enjoy!

Enjoy it for breakfast, brunch, lunch or as a snack – anything goes! My BLT Sandwich with Fried Green Tomatoes recipe couldn’t be easier to make, comes together in 5-minutes and uses a handful of simple and everyday ingredients. It’s one of my favourite sandwiches and is bound to become yours as well! So, let me show you how it’s done. Grab a spoon and come and cook with me!

Notes:

  1. Don’t go Bacon my Heart: I love using hot honey, glazed cooked bacon in this recipe but you can use unseasoned (or plain) cooked bacon straight from the stove or oven. The hot honey glaze adds sweetness and a little heat, perfectly complementing all the ingredients in this dish. If you love bacon but don’t enjoy the cooking or clean-up process, then I’ve got a solution for you - my Simple Oven Bacon - Hot Honey Edition recipe. This recipe will teach you how to make the most succulent and crispy bacon in the oven in just 30-minutes. Simply follow the recipe and get ready for perfectly cooked bacon in no time at all! Bacon slices come in all shapes and sizes - thinner slices require a shorter cook time while thicker cuts benefit from a little more heat. Be sure to keep an eye on the bacon during the last few minutes of cook time, as the colour changes quickly.
